“Born in Belfast in 1981, I was interested in drawing and exploring the creation of images from a young age. This passion for visual concepts has been a prime motivator throughout my life to be constantly working on ideas for new artworks and challenging visual concepts. I am currently studying for a HND Diploma in Fine Art. This work is helping me develop a concise artistic language in which to express myself.” - Dale Mawhinney’s artist statement.
This short film gives the viewer an insight into Dale Mawhinney’s creative process. It is fascinating to hear an artist’s intentions when it comes to their work. This piece is the first in a series of fantasy paintings Dale is working on. His inspiration came from Ariel Killick, a stilt walker and fire performer. Ariel dresses up as fantasy characters and creates whole worlds around herself. However she is restricted by cost, materials or general health and safety to really give a true representation of the character she is trying to portray. Dale explains that what separates painting from other creative art forms is that the only limitation is your mind.
